How to Check Your Filer Status

Three ways to confirm whether you currently appear on the Active Taxpayers List, and what to do if you do not.

What the Active Taxpayers List is

The Active Taxpayers List, usually shortened to ATL, is FBR's published list of taxpayers who have filed their return for the relevant tax year. Banks, property registration offices, vehicle registration authorities and others check this list to determine which withholding rate applies to you.

Being registered and holding an NTN is not the same as being on the ATL. Registration gives you an identity in the system. Filing your return is what puts you on the list.

Method 1: SMS

  1. Open your messaging app.
  2. Type ATL, then a space, then your CNIC number without dashes.
  3. Send it to 9966.
  4. You will receive a reply confirming whether you appear as active for the relevant tax year.

Method 2: The FBR website

  1. Go to the official FBR website at fbr.gov.pk.
  2. Find the Active Taxpayer List verification section.
  3. Enter your CNIC or NTN and complete the on-screen verification.
  4. Your status is displayed along with the tax year it relates to.

Method 3: The Tax Asaan app

FBR's Tax Asaan mobile application includes an ATL verification feature. Install it from your device's app store, open the verification section and enter your CNIC.

Only trust official sources. There are many third-party websites offering filer status checks. Use FBR's own website, the 9966 SMS service or the Tax Asaan app. Do not enter your CNIC into unfamiliar sites.

You checked and you are not on the list

This usually means one of four things:

  • You have never filed. Filing your return is the route onto the list.
  • You did not file for the relevant year. The list is year-specific.
  • You filed recently. The list is updated periodically, so there can be a lag between filing and appearing.
  • You are not registered at all. Registration comes first.

Getting onto the list

If the answer is that you simply have not filed, that is fixable. Our return filing service starts from PKR 3,500, or message us and we will tell you where you stand before you commit to anything.

Please verify current figures. Tax rates, thresholds, penalties and due dates are set by the Federal Board of Revenue and change with each Finance Act. Always confirm the current position for your tax year on the official FBR website or with us before acting.
