What is an NTN?
Your National Tax Number is your identity in Pakistan's tax system. For most individuals it is linked to your CNIC. Without being registered with FBR you cannot file an income tax return, and without filing a return you cannot appear on the Active Taxpayers List.
Who needs to register?
- First-time filers who have never been registered with FBR
- Salaried employees whose employer has begun deducting tax
- Freelancers and consultants receiving payments from clients
- New business owners and sole proprietors
- Anyone who needs filer status for property, vehicle or banking reasons
What we need from you
- CNIC details
- A working mobile number registered in your own name
- A personal email address
- Employer details, or business details if you are self-employed
- Address information for your residence and place of business where applicable
Note on registration in your own name. FBR verification is linked to a mobile number and CNIC belonging to you. We guide you through the process, but the account is registered in your name and remains yours.
How long does it take?
Straightforward individual registrations are usually completed quickly once we have your correct details and verification is received on your own number. Cases with mismatched records or previously existing registrations take longer, and we tell you honestly if yours is one of them.
After registration
Registration alone does not make you a filer. You become an active filer once your income tax return is filed and processed. If you want to go straight through to filing, see our return filing service. If you would rather learn to file on your own, hands-on IRIS training is available.
